Eastern State Penitentiary

Just a few blocks away from the Philadelphia Museum of Art - and all its beauty - is the extreme opposite: the darkness and fear of the historic State Penitentiary. Billed as a revolutionary institution in many ways when it was built in the early 1800s, it was finally shut down in 1971. Through the decades it housed many thousands of criminals... among them were Al Capone - and these two characters: Hannah and Sarah Bjornstad (partners in crime! haha!)

I have decided I am not going to TELL about the facility - as you can look up its website here and find out as much as you want about it....
But, needless to say, it was QUITE a fun and interesting place for the family to go and see - especially if your family has children who need a little encouragement to behave! haha!
Here is a bit of what we saw over a period of the 70 minutes we were there:
A “reconditioned” cell from the 1800s:

Al Capone lived in this “well furnished” cell for over a year:

The Chapel is currently being restored and currently off limits... I could just find a way to get this photo... you can see the mural of Jesus being baptized by John the Baptist.

This was the gate to the hospital section of the prison....

Every cell had one of these!
