CHURCH PHOTOGRAPHY

As a photographer, I am still finding my particular “style” and “niche” that I will nurture and grow. However, I think that it is becoming more and more clear that one of those “niches” that I am developing is the photography of churches.

Obviously I have a love of churches and their architecture and art - especially of the years and ages past. Modern churches, for the most part, are not built to last for the ages. Many are not much more than auditoriums. They do not reflect much about the majesty or beauty of God. Many of them today simply reflect the fads and whims of our fast changing secular world. This is very sad, even as we do affirm that the “church” is not its buildings, but the people of God gathered around Word and Sacrament.

Thankfully there still truly are those houses of worship (old and sometimes even new) which reflect the glory of God and his presence among His people. Some are grand and glorious. Some are rather humble. Some are ornate. Others are very simple. The goal of my photography of churches is to capture, in larger expanses and up-close views, the beauty and glory of our Lord as he blessed each congregation in different ways. The interesting part of churchs is that often they are reflections of the great variety of ethnic and people groups. There is never any lack of variety - and THIS is a beautiful thing!

I am actually surprised at how little there is on the internet that has to do specifically with church photography. There are a couple Flikr groups and you can find a few photographers who have launched projects to photograph all the churches in their state or county. If there is someone reading this who has any resources or expertise in photographing churches, please contact me - I would love to hear from you!
